Every cook and every kitchen will be slightly different, but there are some basic things that every kitchen should have. Below is my breakdown of what I have in my kitchen and I suggest you have in yours.
Comment On Quality: I am a buy it once sort of person, so I would rather spend more money now and never have to spend it again. So while some of these tools seem expensive on the front end, many of them, particularly the pans and knives, will last your for decade or even the rest of your life is you take care of them.
Instant Pot
As a kid, I have fond memories of my grandmother making potatoes for dinner in her trusty old stove top pressure cooker. Using the old school ones have always been a challenge, getting the temperature and time just right.
An Instant Pot takes all the fuss and worry out of pressure cooking food and makes cooking so much easier. I’ve cooked boiled eggs, soups, stew and a whole lot more in mine. Especially if you are pressed for time, or have a small kitchen, this is an ESSENTIAL appliance for your kitchen. For most people a 6 quart Instant Pot is plenty big, but if you have a big family or like to cook ahead, get the 8 quart.
I do suggest that you get an accessory kit with a steamer and slow cooker top. The egg bite mold is a lot of fun to use as well and is an easy way to make grab and go breakfasts.
Essential Score:
Colander
A good quality, large capacity colander is essential for any kitchen. These are used for washing foods, draining pasta, and so much more. I prefer simple stainless steel ones as they are durable and easy to clean.
Essential Score:
Strainer
A strainer is a finer version of your colander and is used to get fine particles out of your food. The common use is to strain chunks and solids out of your soups and stocks. While you won’t use these as often as a colander, they are handy to have around.
Essential Score:
Cast Iron Skillet
With a good cast iron skillet, you can virtually rule the world. From everything from steaks to casseroles and corn breads, there isn’t anything in your kitchen that is as versatile as a good cast iron pan. If you are on a budget, the classic Lodge 10″ Skillet will serve you well. If you have a little more money to spend, a cast iron skillet that has a milled finish is super nice.
Purchase wisely as your cast iron skillet will last you your lifetime if you take care of it.
